My most recent journal entry in the good ole’ Moleskin and a question I ponder often while in Asia:
I asked a group of girls from England when I was on a Visa run in Vientiane why they were dressed the way they were. They looked like they were going to a club in Vegas (Their outfit probably cost more than everything in my backpack). Their response was they wanted to look good. I said fair enough.
But I still don’t understand…
We ended up going to a cheap Indian restaurant and then late night bowling where they were preyed on by extremely drunk Laos locals. The miniskirts didn’t help. I guess neither did the blonde hair (amazing to your average male Laos)
This isn’t really about the heels though. Whatever about the heels. The thing that bothered me most about the girls was how disinterested and grossed out they seemed to be by everything around them. They seemed to have forgotten they were in Asia. They had no interest walking around the city or engaging with the culture at all. It was actually annoying.
Anyways there’s no point to this post, just a question I have thought about when I see girls backpacking Southeast Asia through the nicest hotels and wearing their nicest clothes. Why? Whats the point? I have no problem with staying at resorts as that’s the only way my family and I ever traveled when I was a child. But this isn’t Hawaii and its definitely not London. Its Southeast Asia and if you have decided to do the backpacker route, maybe leave the heels at home. It’s dangerous. The roads are uneven.
To each their own though. Who knows, you might even end up in a high end club in Bangkok. This is a boys perspective after all…
